JO 512: Designing a magazine

In my JO512 class, I am learning how to design a magazine.

My plan is to make my magazine about Boston foods so I am repurposing a series, The Boston Cheese Party, that I have been writing for the Daily Free Press as the editorial content of my project. The series is about finding the best mac and cheese in Boston, and so far the winner is Mmmac and Cheese.

I have not decided on a name yet but I am currently thinking of The Hungry Hub.

All of the pages in the magazine are offset to the right and upwards to give a light and airy feel to the pages. Each page is based on a 10 piece grid structure to create a balanced structure within the spread.

I decided that the editorial pages should be a pastel yellow to complement the yellow in the dishes. The text box is white to contrast the yellow, but it is tinted yellow to fit with the magazine’s cozy aesthetic.

The picture I included on the first page was the regular macaroni and cheese from Mmmac and Cheese since it is the most aesthetically pleasing photo of the ones I have taken of the mac and cheeses we have eaten. I also believe that the simplicity of the macaroni and cheese makes the page appealing, but the texture of it makes the page look interesting.

This is just a rough draft that I came up with quickly in class, so there is definitely lots of room for improvement on the design.
